One of the things that I like to do is share with you guys some of the great reads and rare treasures that I find on my journey through reading and one book I discovered recently was Pete Clark's Midnight Riders; an alternative tale of the American War Of Independence. Here is what I thought:
"Think you know your American History? Well, think again! For this is the
story that they DIDN'T teach you at school. The REAL story that lies
behind all those boring facts....
From as far back as anyone can
remember, man has been afraid of the monsters that lie waiting in the
dark, hidden in the shadows, poised to strike at the first opportunity.
For too long these monsters
have been dismissed as simple scary stories,
legends with no substance, until now...
For as war beckons all
across the Americas, both sides find themselves facing a mutual enemy as
all sorts of preternatural and supernatural creatures begin emerging to
join in with the fighting. Zombies, werewolves and all manner of
nasties have come out of the woodwork and soon start frequenting every
major battle. It is up to a lone group of Americans, destined to grow up
and become legends themselves in time, to stop the tide of these
monsters before everything is lost; not just their right to independence
and freedom. One man, or what was once a man, is behind the sudden
emergence of these creatures but stopping him will be no easy task.....
This
is a great alternative history parody novel that is both educational as
well as humorously funny. The humour here often borders on satire but
it is equally slapstick too! Think Robert Rankin mixed with a heady dose
of Monty Python and lots of jokes about the french, with a little bit
of education in American history thrown in as well, and you are coming
close.
I was privy to a review copy just prior to release and I
found it a sheer delight to read! Pete Clarke is a genius the way he has
combined so many elements to make a thoroughly good novel that never
disappoints for a second!
If you are looking for something
completely different then you have found it here! The book is a cracking
good read and well worth picking up! You certainly won't read anything
else this year quite like it and it offers a very different look to the
history you only THINK you know!"
I mean seriously, check this book out- it is funny as fuck and a really well written first novel that entertains as well as somewhat educates! True, not all of it is based on fact but I love the way that Pete blends real historical knowledge with his own brand of lore, myth and legend to create something memorable as well as funny.
Gets two thumbs up from me!
