Circle Vs Circle Jerk...

So, for the past few months I kept seeing this film on Netflix and every time I was all like, 'nah, not really in the mood for that tonight,' until one day last week I finally gave into the temptation.
The premise sounded kind of interesting - 50 strangers wake up in a circle and, one by one, slowly start to realise that they have been abducted and that each of them is about to be killed in turn.
But the process isn't random.
By voting with their hands, they can decide between them who is going to be the next of them to die.
There are only two rules - you cannot vote for yourself, and if you attempt to leave the circle, then you yourself are killed and you become the victim for that round.

The problem I had was that I kind of felt I had seen all of this done before - and done better - by Catt Dahman in her novel, Circle Jerk.

In Catt Dahman's book, a group of apparently random strangers all wake up to find themselves in cages, handcuffed to the person in the next cell and in order to be rewarded with food, or weapons, or luxury goods, they all have to undergo a series of grisly tasks - which normally involves some kind of mutilation, either self-mutilation or on the person in the next cell along! The idea being that they are all being forced to undergo the ultimate psychological experiment, designed to investigate just how far they are willing to go in order to survive.

My main problem with the movie, Circle was that it all just seemed to go on for way, way too long.
About half way through, I started to lose interest and I no longer found myself caring about who lived and who died anymore.
This probably had a lot to do with the film having such a large cast to begin with.
Where Catt Dahman's book is better is that we only start off with a handful of characters. This gives you ample chance to get to know the characters and form some kind of bond with them.
With Circle, there are several characters who never even get a chance to speak before they are bumped off - and the process of death comes across as far too clean and clinical. A laser, firing from the centre, dispatches each of the contestants in turn as they lose their vote, only for their bodies to then be whisked away into darkness.

There are some interesting moments - don't get me wrong, the film isn't all bad - namely when the group start trying to decide how to choose which of them will be the next to die. One guy comes up with the idea of picking off all the older people as they have less of their lives ahead of them, but soon the voting becomes even more strategic as people start pairing off in different factions. It is painfully obvious right frontman start that this film is less about the violence and more about asking deep, philosophical and often moral questions but watching this, you are often left with the feeling that the director is less pointing those questions at you, rather more forcing them down your throat.

Circle Jerk, on the other hand, is far less subtle - it is another of Catt Dahman's books intended solely to shock and disturb you, and both in equal measure - and so makes no bones about trying to be clever; instead wanting only to provoke a reaction in much the same way as movies such as Hostel and the Saw franchise.

It is probably unfair to compare Circle and Circle Jerk, not least because they are two very different media, but even the film, Would You Rather - which I reviewed recently in an earlier post - was better than this drab and uninspiring offering.
The ending of Circle, when it comes, is disappointing and leaves you with few answers and very little satisfaction - in contrast, both Would You Rather and Circle Jerk provide much more closure and so end up being a lot more satisfying to enjoy.

Circle gets a very average 3 stars out of 5.

Catt Dahman's Circle Jerk, however, gets a much more impressive 5/5.

D is for Dahman...

This week's Blog challenge is the letter 'D' and just for a change, I am going to look at another of my favourite authors and her latest book to hit the shelves, Circle Jerk.

Yes, Catt Dahman is back in the genre she does best - extreme Laymonesque horror, perfectly pitched to set your nerves on edge. This time around, a group of strangers all awaken to find themselves in cages - one arm or one leg handcuffed through the bars of the next cage around, linking together until they form a circle - hence the title.

At first all these strangers think they have nothing in common but, upon entering into conversation, all discover they share a mutual acquaintance. It is not long before this acquaintance makes her presence felt - and that is where the fun begins.

Their captor plans to force them all to undergo a bizarre, psychological experiment - the nature of which is to discover just how far all of them will go to survive. Provided with limited food and rations as and when their captor sees fit, the group soon find themselves playing a series of very deadly games; games in which they are forced to push themselves to the absolute limit and in which only a few of them will survive.

If you are at all squeamish, don't like scenes of torture or cannibalism, or are of a nervous disposition, this book is NOT for you. It is quite graphic in places, thoroughly unpleasant, and features everything I like the most in Dahman's writing. There were more than a few instances when I again found myself thinking - as I have numerous times before reading her work - 'Catt, you are one evil, sick bitch at times', but that is exactly why I love her horror fiction. She makes you care for her characters then puts them through Hell.

Laymon's influence is present throughout - along with the very obvious influence of films such as Saw or Hostel, better known in some circles as 'Torture Porn' movies - but Catt, at the same time, does a good job of making the story her own.

If I had one personal complaint, it was that I wished we had seen a bit more of their captors and the end sequence had maybe been extended a little bit and expanded on, but then it is Catt's story, not mine, and what she does here works very well indeed.

If you have enjoyed any of her other titles such as Z is for Zombie, Smooth, Louisiana Saturday or Alice and Friends, then you will certain, enjoy this. If you haven't read those earlier books, then this is a great place to start.

A good, strong solid 4* - it is so good to see Catt back write in the genre in which she belongs....

Hello, hello, let me introduce myself (again), so good to know you....

So, it's fair to say that it has been a while since I last touched base and, by now, many of you who regularly follow my Blog have probably long given me up for dead and abandoned any hope of me ever returning. No such luck!!

In my defense, it has been a very busy year!

Firstly, because of a nice little return on a P.P.I claim I received back in January I was able to take myself, my wife and my daughter Emilie off to Disneyland, Paris. We were there for five days and had an absolutely awesome time that was quite simply out of this world and that now feels like a beautiful dream I had except for the fact that I have bucket-loads of photos to remember it all by! I even had my photo taken next to Darth Vader which, for a Geek like me, you can well imagine was like all my Christmases rolled into one! If you haven't been and can afford it I can recommend it- it was an experience I will never forget and I was just glad I could treat Emilie....especially in light of what has come more  recently!

Since then, I have been concentrating on my new writing career that I started to tell you about in my last Blog post. I now have an Amazon Author page here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mark-Woods/e/B00F5ZCMAG/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_11?qid=1382973066&sr=1-11 where you can easily locate all the Anthologies my short fiction appears in. I have a piece of Flash (very, very short) fiction and another story appearing shortly in yet another Anthology that will be appearing soon but that is not yet published and am working on my first of three intended novels; the first of which will offer something Zombie related but very, very different from anything else out there! Just to whet your appetite, my newest short story to be published soon is called Dairy Of The Dead (no typo) and features Zombie Cows. The anthology it will be appearing in will be called MIDNIGHT REMAINS.

I also have a Facebook Author Page so you can connect to me here too: https://www.facebook.com/markwoodsauthor?fref=ts  and keep updated on all my latest writing news and projects. There are too many to mention here but I have at least two more projects in the pipeline that are set to be published by year end! One is currently in Editing, the other is a collaboration with FIVE other authors and will be ready in the very near future!

Something else I have been doing is Editing for my good friend Catt Dahman at her Publishing Press http://www.jellingtonashton.com/

This is lots of fun and not just a little bit hard work at times trying to fit it in with my already hectic, busy lifestyle but we have some truly great authors on board and you should really check out the website for some brilliant reads from likewise up and coming authors. Some, if not all of these names, will be BIG!

In between all of this, me and my family also went back to Lego land this year (you may recall we went there way back in this Blog's early days) - this time for two days, staying in a swanky hotel for a couple of nights between visits! This again was lots of fun and Emilie could enjoy it more now she is older so that was all good!

So you see - I haven't exactly been resting on my laurels. I do have SOME justification for never writing, not calling etc, taking my readers for granted but I am willing to make a change and be here for you more often...but on one condition. I want you to be here for me.

Remember when I blogged openly about my depression? Well, something else has happened recently that has thrown all the good things that have happened to me this year firmly against the wall and, once again, I want to share with you my most recent experiences frankly, openly and honestly. I will talk more about this in my next Blog Post but my young daughter Emilie was recently diagnosed as a Type One Diabetic.

This may not sound too serious to some of you but that is why I want to share. The last three weeks have been a tense, frightening and tough period of time to cope with and have required a lot of readjusting and reassessment of our lives. Many people don't realize just how tough living with Type One ( or Type Two Diabetes either for that matter) can be. Not just for those affected but for everyone around them too...

In my next Blog Post, I will be sharing just how we found out and what we have had to deal with in the last three weeks. If you read it, please share it with your friends and family or with any others you may know who are in a similar situation. I will not be going into medical details or offering any medical advice (I am not a Doctor and that would be both remiss of me and wrong!). All I will be doing is sharing my wife's and my own experiences of Living With Type One in order that maybe just maybe I can help someone else in the same situation or maybe help somebody be diagnosed earlier by explaining the symptoms and events that lead to Emilie being diagnosed...

Until next time (soon), keep your chins up guys!

Why I love Catt Dahman....

So yeah, yeah, yeah ~ I know, I keep saying I'm going to keep this Blog updated and I don't but things DO keep getting in the way I promise! I'm not really ignoring you!

Today, I want to talk about my author friend, Horror writer Catt Dahman, and why I have so much love and respect for her right now!

I've mentioned her before as the author of the Z Is For Zombie series but she is also responsible for so much more! In the last six months or so , she has also released the awesome Smooth, Alice And Friends and most recently, Titanic Q.E.D which is a homage to H.P.Lovecraft and is simply a brilliant read! Her latest, Helen Of Troy, Vampire is still waiting to be read but I am expecting big things from it if it reaches her usual standards. (She will be nervous now, reading this and anticipating my latest review!)

I met Catt through Goodreads and, more specifically,  the Author-Reader Co-Op section, where she was asking for reviews for Z Is For Zombie. Anyway, she loved my brutally honest reviews so much that she took away some of the criticism I levied at her and rewrote two of the books in the series and made edits! How cool is that? That I had an influence on her work??

This kind of helped her get a Publishing Deal with Severed Press and ever since then she has continued to send me her books for review purposes and has continually praised me publicly and bigged me up at every opportunity!

Last Wednesday, this Guy called Gary Mundford was responsible for organizing this huge Zombie Fest event on Facebook where authors and fans could get together and exchange dialogue, win competitions and give away/ receive free E-book downloads. The event was a tremendous success and not least helped by Catt who stepped in to help when Gary became swamped by his real life. The event was awesome, I ended up getting loads of new stuff to read and offering out my review services but everyone agrees that if Catt hadn't jumped aboard, the chances are it might all ended up a bit of a damp squib.

She has encouraged me to try writing stuff of my own because she says I have a way with words and so when this Zombie Fest announced that they would be producing an anthology of short fiction to commemorate the event I decided to give it a go. My story only went and got included!! The anthology is not quite ready yet because Gary is formatting and editing it in his spare time but

will be free for a week, I think it was decided and, after that, will go on sale with proceeds going to the Walking Wounded charity. Now, if Catt hadn't have encouraged me to write, something I have toyed around with for years without actually ever really doing or achieving anything with it, then I would never have gotten my name in print! Now, I actually have something published though I am more nervous about Catt reading it than anyone else because she is my inspiration and my muse!

This is just one of the reasons as to why I am now putting her on my 1001 Books And Authors To Read before You Die list. Though there were moments when I might have thought her Z series faltered slightly and I  wondered how it could last 9 books, by the final novel I was suddenly realizing how close I was to the characters and how much I had enjoyed reading their exploits to the point that I became quite passionate and emotional at the way she treated them in the last book. I believe I even called her jokingly a "a nasty, sick bitch" for some of the things she put them through ~ something that she thankfully took as a huge compliment. Her words (and I paraphrase) were along the lines that these are the words every horror writer lives to hear! Lol!

Oh, but that's not enough. There's more reasons why I love this author and have nothing but the utmost respect for her. She is tireless to a fault, has anther 5 books on the go even now and even more irons in the fire. When Catt was on American Radio Station, Zombie Radio, doing an interview, she gave me a shout-out; she calls me HER British Reviewer and gets possessive over me if I offer my reviews to other authors and continues to tell me to keep going in regards to my writing to the point where I am now slowly putting together a portfolio of short horror fiction that I am toying with the idea of releasing as an anthology collection at some point in time! At the moment, that's all it is ~ just an idea I have but who knows where this will take me and I am determined to keep writing and see where it goes.

But that's still not it. Following after Zombie Fest, (and early indications are that it was such a success there will be another one) Catt and a few others have all gotten together to form a new Indie Publishing House as self-publishing looks like it is going to end up being a death knell for writers; due in part to all the dross that has flooded the market in recent years that has been self-published. And because she has so much love and respect for ME and my honesty and integrity, she has asked me to be one of her Editors checking submissions for quality when they come in. There is no money involved as yet but Catt and her team have high hopes and aspirations for this Publishing enterprise so who knows where this might lead and I might even have a foot in the door should I get anything together worth publishing. I don't expect any special treatment if I do and will expect to be treated just as any other author but can think of nothing more exciting than having Catt help promote my work!

I once told Mrs.Sparky, when talking about the artwork that I sporadically do, that I wanted to leave something behind to mark my passage. Maybe this is how it all starts to happen, how I will get to leave my mark, who knows... there are no guarantees in life but if you don't aim high then you might as well go home ~ a credo that I've kind of borrowed from Catt and her new Publishing House, J Ellington Ashton Press! Remember the name, because from little acorns, big trees grow and Catt and the rest of the team have all got high aspirations for this new endeavor....and to be asked to be a  part of this, though a little overwhelming, has left me feeling excited, thrilled and more than just a little bit flattered.

Anyway, that's it ~ I'm so sorry that this has been such a long post but I wanted to share with you all just a few of the reasons why I love Catt Dahman! She has become more than just my favourite author right now, she has become a dear friend and I hope that she feels the same. If you are reading this Catt, thank-you for inspiring me and believing in me and I promise to live up to all your expectations of me!

That's me, Sparky, signing off... (for now...)

xxxx

P.S all my reviews of her books are available on Goodreads and Amazon, so feel free to check them out and don't forget to give her books some of your own love!

My thoughts on Event Horizon: Z is for Zombie 2

"Event Horizon is the second book in the Z is for Zombie series and continues on from events in the first story. A group of survivors has left the derelict hospital basement where they have been living to try and find somewhere else safer and easier to defend for them and the rest of their increasingly growing numbers. But the world outside has changed and it is no longer just the Zeds that the group have to be worried about! As all of them begin having dreams about a one eyed man and a wolf, they realise that something bigger is afoot and that a climatic battle beteen good and evil is building on the horizon....

This is a great second entry with a much more epic and grandiose feel to it, akin in many ways to Stephen King's The Stand in the way that two sides are slowly starting to form. Here we get to see the origins of those two opposing forces as we discover how the division between them first came about and start to get a feel for the bigger picture that is starting to evolve.

These books are very character-driven, with much emphasis on how the survivors cope and adapt to the different situations they must face, but you get the sense that something much bigger and dramatic is just around the corner! I especially like the fact that no-one is safe and that almost anyone could succumb to tragedy at any moment. This gives an extra level of danger to the books as you are never quite sure what is coming....

Keep up the good work Miss Dahman. This ambitious series is slowly going from strength to strength...."
